Down a crooked little road, over a small river, up the hill, there were cow crossing signs and then we saw the red barn amidst the other smaller buildings of a typical dairy farm enterprise. A young man Greeted us and yelled “Grandpa, someone to see the barn”. Stanley Holmes walked down and his daughter, Erin, joined us too.
We entered the barn and I was instantly transported to our own farm that we had in Northern Ontario many years ago. The sweet smell of the hay, the old wood and the pleasant pungent smell of the cows brought wonderful memories to mind. To see the interior of a round barn is nothing short of awesome? To realize that it was built 118 years ago, by many hands and it has been used all those years for a dairy farm is astounding! Not only that, but sitting close by was an old sugar shack – the Holmes family have been milking cows and producing maple syrup here for 127 years.
